Bicycle Tour: Day 1 - Wind Blown

ben_cocker_spanialAfter breakfast at Beachview Country Guest House we set off to start our journey from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town. I opted for the shorter route starting at a further weigh point (WP2) and Jaco departing from Beachview. In hindsight, this was a good choice for me. Jaco’s climb to WP2 was approx 200m. From WP2 we rode together towards the Baviaanskloof Wilderness. Our greatest concerns were the weather and it put us to the test. The steepest downhill required us to peddle hard. Despite this we attained speeds of up to 57km.

I was not to make the full journey today as my preparations were way inadequate. I completed 49km of the 82km for day one with a few pains in the butt and one small accident. I seem to be prone to accidents. I’d advise that if you are going to do this trail, you do more than what I did to prepare.

We ended our day staying at Middlewater Guest House on a farm called Mount Ingwe (www.mountingwe.co.za) which operates an eco-tourism business quad bikes, 4×4 trails, hiking and accommodation. This is the home of Ben (seen in the picture above), a lively and fun dog.

Wacky Wine Weekend!

You’d be crazy to miss the Robertson Wacky Wine Weekend coming up at the beginning of June.  Just purchase a passport for R60, which gives you free tasting (25ml samples) for the duration of the festival. It is a great way to learn more about SA’s wines and to stock up the cellar with your favourite tipple.

Most farms in the Robertson area play along and many add to the fun by hosting live music, events, arts and craft exhibits, kiddies fun events, animal petting farms and plenty more. Go for the day, or stay over at a variety of accommodations.  But book early!  4-7 June 2009.

Bottoms up!

On yer bikes boys!

Big daddy of Diya Travel Consultants, Grant du Toit, and his mate Jaco are sliding into their lycra and cycling from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town along a route known as The Freedom Trail - 34 Degrees South.  Visit the website, www.freedomchallenge.org.za, for more info on the route and photos.
The twosome will cycle around 45 - 109km’s per day – without a rest day.  Brave… or stupid?  We will only find out once they crack open the champers on Mother City soil, nearly 1000km’s and 14 days later!   When this twosome is not working in South Africa and the Middle East as ROV Pilots (Remotely Operated Underwater Vehicle), they attempt to hide from their better halves by undertaking crazy cycling adventures, scuba diving, flying remote helicopters and… well… drinking lots of beer.
We hope the awesome twosome will be able to take some time out from their gruelling schedule to give us updates and photos of the finest biking routes,  the hottest spots along the way, insights into their accommodations (we hear a night in a cave is on the cards), and the state of their calves and derrieres.   Good luck guys!

Welcome to the official Diya Travel Consultants blog

- Here you will find snippets on great things to eat, drink, see and do - in and around Southern Africa - and the best time of year to do it in.

From the craziest bungee jumping and the coolest scuba diving spots - to a luxury picnic with elephants - and slurping oysters - while watching the whales play in our aquamarine water.

We dive with Great White Sharks, and paraglide down Table Mountain. We talk about premier wines, gourmet foods, and unique ways to travel in style around the country. We stay over at exclusive boutique hotels, get African mud scrubs and visit some of the most magnificent game lodges and national parks: and we go on wild safaris.

And sometimes we sleep under the stars, with the big African sky as a blanket, and a choir of crickets as live entertainment. Leave your comments, and share your experiences, or just kick back, and enjoy the trip… This is all just for you!

If you want to know more about Diya Travel Consultants, take a trip through our website, or subscribe to our bi-monthly newsletter, which will give you the latest info on what’s hot in Southern Africa.
